Want to see how far a ringed
seal can swim? So do we!
Ringed seals are an important part of the arctic marine ecosystem,
both as the main prey of polar bears, and a major consumer of marine
fish and invertebrates. WWF-Canada is supporting a program to tag
and track ringed seals in the western arctic. Scientists have recently
discovered that these seals—previously thought to stay close
to Canadian shores—can swim all the way to Russia! Visit their
web site to follow seals in the Beaufort Sea: www.permafrost.com/seals. |
Researchers from Canada's Department of
Fisheries and Oceans release one of the seals being tracked on WWF-Canada's
web site. |
