Wetland regions of South Africa

GI Cowan

Abstract

Wetland regions are areas within which similar and characteristic wetlands develop in locations that have similar topography, hydrology and nutrient regimes. Wetland regions of South Africa can be broken up into four groups based on the morphology of the country. Twenty-six regions are described. These regions were determined by the subdivision of the broad groups into geomorphological provinces and their climate. Differences in geology determine minor groups within these regions. This system of regions is then compared with those regions determined by other author's in related fields.
