Wetlands of South AfricaAbstract This paper describes the Ramsar Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat). Wetlands are defined in terms of the Convention. Criteria for including wetlands in the List of Wetlands of International Importance in terms of the Convention and guidelines for the application of these criteria are set out. The designation of wetlands to the List and subsequent action recommended by the Convention is described. The concept of wise use of wetiands and the actions recommended to ensure implementation of this concept are set out. South Africa's participation in the Convention is presented and the actions taken towards meeting our commitments in terms of the Convention are described. An appendix provides summaries of the 12 wetlands which have been designated to date by South Africa to the List of Wetlands of International Importance.GI Cowan (ed).1995.
