Wetlands of South AfricaAbstract The distribution and status, feeding and breeding ecology, and conservation of the five species of pelicaniform birds resident at inland and estuarine wetlands in South Africa are recieved in this paper. Available diet studies give inadequate impression of seasonal and inter-annual variation and range of food taken but clearly these birds are important piscivorous that may exert a substantial impact on some fish stocks and communities. Within South Africa the two pelicans are rare and merit active conservation. The other three species are widespread and not endangered. Conservation needs focus on three issues: the protection of key breeding areas from disturbance; competition and conflict with anglers and fish-farmers; and the potential of these birds as pollution indicators.GI Cowan (ed).1995.
