Wetlands and water-related parasitic diseases of man in southern Africa

CC Appleton, BL Sharp & D le Sueur

Abstract

The water-related parasites of man in South-Africa are reviewed, where possible in the context of the types of waterbody in which they may be transmitted. Since only two such diseases, bilharzia (schistosomiasis) and malaria, have been adequately researched in this country, the review concentrates on these. Artificial wetlands such as rice paddies and those created by irrigation spillage can exacerbate transmission of both these diseases and the situation in north-eastern Natal is used as a case study.
