Wetlands of South AfricaAbstract This chapter deals with intercontinental migratory birds that divide their year between breeding in Eurasia in the northern summer and spending the southern summer in South Africa, and two periods spent on migration, southwards and northwards. From a southern hemisphere perspective, these are summer visitors, summering in Africa, but northern hemispherists think of them as winter escapists, wintering in Africa. This chapter will avoid using seasons, and the terms southward migration, non-breeding season, northward migration and breeding season will be used.GI Cowan (ed).1995.
