Wetlands of South AfricaAbstract Coral-inhabited reefs are limited in distribution in South Africa, occurring mainly in conservation areas in northern Natal. Information is presented on their extent and on local conditions. Recent investigations indicate that they are rich in biodiversity, have unique features and include coral communities that extend unusually far south. Factors influencing reef community structure are discussed and a review of current research is presented. This ranges from studies on coral taxonomy and reproduction to long-term monitoring of coral predators and responses in reef community structure to climate change. The reefs are well conserved with the exception of Aliwal Shoal, which enjoys minimum protection. Recommendations are made for a cohesive approach in reef management incorporating zonation into open, restricted and protected diving areas.GI Cowan (ed).1995.
