Wetlands of South AfricaAbstract The definition of wetlands needs to be broadened for amphibians, to accommodate all the areas where frogs may breed. The distribution and ecology of frogs are briefly surveyed, paying attention to threats to their survival. They have limited use as food for man, but are the only vertebrates with the potential to provide a host of pharmacologically active substances. It is suggested that if they are to survive, one needs to know more about their distribution, and they need to enjoy a higher profile. Habitat protection will go a long way toward ensuring their continued success. In conclusion, some thoughts on legislation are given, some of which are well meaning, but inappropriate.GI Cowan (ed).1995.
